Spotting Gum Disease

One of the biggest dental problems is gum disease, even though it can be avoided in many cases. Click image above to read more.

The good news is that gum disease can be reversed if caught early. Here are some signs to help you spot gum disease, so that you’ll know when it’s time to alert your dentist you might have a problem.

Bleeding gums
Gums that bleed when you apply pressure to them are a solid symptom of early gum disease. Healthy gums shouldn’t bleed when you touch them or brush your teeth. Your gums are probably bleeding if you have a metallic taste or see reddish color when you spit out your toothpaste. Inspect your mouth to see the source of the bleeding and look for other signs.

Swollen gums
Your gums are not as healthy as they should be if they appear swollen, red, or puffy. They may also be painful when you touch them, but early swelling might not yet cause discomfort. If you see minor gum swelling, tell your dentist at your next checkup so a more thorough examination can be done.

Loose teeth
When your gums begin receding or drawing back from your teeth, they are no longer able to hold your teeth firmly in place and your teeth may start to become loose. Loose teeth are a sign that gum disease has advanced, and you should see your dentist as soon as possible.

Gaps between your teeth
As your gums recede, they will cover less amounts of your teeth and they will loosen. You will likely see gaps appear between your teeth. This is reason to consult your dentist for advice. In the meantime, make sure that food doesn’t get trapped in the gaps and lead to further complications like tooth decay and more advanced gum disease.

Bad breath
Gum disease can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth, which in turn causes bad breath. A foul odor from your mouth can indicate that your gums are not healthy.
